Now that we are into March it is nearly the end of the tax year once again. This means it is nearly time to start thinking about filling out your tax return and declaring all the income you have earned from self employment in the last year.
So what better time could there be to sort through your filing cabinet?
The best part about doing this slightly ahead of time is that you have time to prepare yourself and your accounts. If you keep a lot of paperwork in your filing cabinets you will want to make sure you get everything straight before you do your accounts.
If you have ever tried to start your accounts and then come across things that are missing or mislaid, you will know how frustrating it can be. Let’s face it, doing your accounts is hardly the most enjoyable of tasks anyway. And when you are in the mood to do it all you want to plough through it and get as much done as possible.
But if you have to stop and go and look for something in the filing cabinet it can interrupt the flow of work you have going. So why not tackle the filing cabinet first and make sure everything is ready for you when you start thinking about accounting time when April arrives?
You will find that doing it in two stages like this is much easier. This is especially true if you try your best to keep your filing cabinet and accounts tidy but end up falling short at some point. The last thing you want to do when you are trying to sort out your accounts is to re-organise the cabinet as well. So tackle this first and worry about your accounts later. It focuses your mind and enables you to figure out how you can press ahead. And if you find any important paperwork you know you will need to complete your accounts, you can set it to one side or have a separate hanging file in the cabinet for all other such paperwork as well.
March doesn’t have to be a worrying time as you focus on the new tax year ahead. In fact it can be a great time to focus on getting things ready for a new year – so why not tackle that cabinet right now?
