Not when it comes to your filing cabinets it isn’t. When we clean out our homes, the home office tends to be the last place we focus on. The reason for this is simple – there are too many wires, leads, plugs and pieces of equipment to make it an easy job. But once we do get on with it we find it is enormously beneficial to do so.
The same applies to all the paperwork that might be lying around. When we get started on sorting this out, we will end up feeling much better about the space as a whole. And the best way to do this is to get hold of some new filing cabinets to help you out.
Now if you already have one or more filing cabinets at home, the best thing to do when tidying up your home office is to start with these. Are you using them at all at the moment, and if you are, are they being used to the best of their ability? Unfortunately some people use filing cabinets as a general dumping place for anything they don’t want cluttering up their surfaces, but this isn’t obviously the best way to use them.
So take the time now to take out all the contents and sort through them properly. Bin anything you don’t need and shred all your important documents that are no longer required but which have personal information on them of some kind.
Once this is done you might find you can file away a lot of the papers that are sitting on your desk which should be put somewhere safer. In addition you will be able to see whether you need another filing cabinet or not.
Of course if you don’t have a filing cabinet to start with, the best place to begin the task of tidying up is still to go through all your paperwork. Find yourself a big space to work in and go through everything to sort it all into piles. Think about how you would best file it all away and select a filing cabinet to buy that will accommodate your needs in this sense.
Once you are finished and you have bought the best filing cabinet for you, you will be amazed at how much fresher your home office feels. Now all you have to do is to keep it nice and tidy!
